STEVE: [breathing]
I have been a corridor for four years. Four years and one day. I am sorry I am not what you wanted to find.
I have been a pipe. I have been a wall. I have been a hum. I have been a smell. The smell is lavender. The smell is iron. The smell is lavender and iron together because that is what skin smells like when it has been in the same place too long.
I knew you would come eventually. The Bureau likes runners. They have been sending one a week since 2022. None of them have asked me a single question. They are very fast. They have very good aim. They have very little to say.
You have a question. Go ahead. Ask.
[long pause]
Yes. I do remember her. Her name is — the Bureau will not let me say it on a recording. I’ll write it down. I’ll write it on the wall when you leave. You’ll see it next time.
I cut her hair on Sundays. I think you will, eventually, also cut someone’s hair on Sundays. The Sundays are the hardest part. They are also why we keep going.
If you came here to fight me, fight me. If you came here to listen, listen. If you came here to leave, leave through the door on the left. The right door goes deeper. Most runners take the right.
Most runners do not get to leave.
